Would anyone like to review & recommend my preK?

Recommended Posts

Short story:

global delay, FTT, OT aged him at life skills of 2 yo (an almost 3 yr delay), , gross motor good, doesn't yet assign meaning to anything written (letters, numbers etc), no pre-reading skills, scribbles (no identifiable pictures), nuero-psych scored him at 30% (on exactly what scale, I'm not sure, but I think she meant his age?). He also has a mild SID, mostly with wet, slimy things on his hands or face, brushing his teeth, no playdoh, pudding, etc.

He will be 5, but looks/acts/behaves about 2-3 years.

What I've gotten for him is here:

http://www.lifewithmy3boybarians.com/2008/03/troubles-prek-learning-tools.html

Could moms with experience with global delay, SID, and such things take a look and see if they see any gaps? Anything I'm grossly missing?

Not pictured, but also a major part, is the book list from FIAR, Caldecott, all those read alouds that he LOVES and we will be doing daily.

Thanks! I feel like I'm starting from scratch and hs'ing for the first time all over again. :) He sure like to keep me on my toes.

Thank you.

Do you have a diagnosis for him at this point?

I would spend time on some preschool skills. When he is ready, I would look at http://www.hwtears.com and check out their preschool readiness stuff---fun songs, big wooden pieces to manipulate, etc. For math type stuff, I would work on counting, matching, sorting, etc. in every day life--in the store, folding laundry, setting the table, etc.

At this age and developmental level I would make sure to get in LOTS of good physical activity. Therapeutic horseback riding is wonderful for many kids if you can do that. Swimming, playgrounds, dirt piles, bike riding (trike, etc.), and on and on.

Take him lots of places and talk to him about everything (as I am sure you are doing). I would also focus on OT, PT, Speech, etc.==whatever he needs.

Now, I did use PPI, a special needs preschool for my 12dd at that age. She LOVED it and was able to get OT, PT, and speech more often. She only went for 1 semester but it was a good experience for her and she still talks fondly of her time there.

OK, I was pressed for time earlier and thought you had bought a "program" for him and the link was for that. Now I see it was your blog.

I read enough to know he was very preemie and had a brain bleed and O2 needs. Sorry I didn't read it earlier.

Sounds like he has many of the same delays we have here---different reasons but similar.

My 12dd and 11dd both have mitochondrial DNA mutations AND nuclear DNA mutations. As of our last appointment with the specialist they were the only 2 known cases in the world to have both types. Therefore---lots of the future is unknown as they are charting the course. They have POLG-1 and LHON to be exact.

Basically 12dd was born at 8# 8oz, 18 1/2 inches long (assuming full term---we got her at 7 1/2 months old). She was 13#6oz. at almost 8 months and developmentally about 2 weeks old. She was a failure to thrive, neglected/abused and possibly shaken baby.

She caught up on her gross motor stuff fairly quickly but had lots of other issues. Now at 12 she is on a long list of meds---she is happy that she "only" needs 17 pills in the morning now. Her daily count is about 45 pills. She has an IQ tested at 38 but ranges of 20-120. We think it is more like 65 or so than 38. She is doing 1st grade work now. Math is extremely hard but her reading is now about mid 2nd grade level.

11dd came at 2 days old, a 36 weeker with low apgars that they should NOT have sent home that early but did as she was going to foster care (us). She was hospitalized 5 times by 3 months old, was transfused at 3 weeks old, on home O2 for a short time as a toddler---so I know the tubing fun. She is also now on a host of meds. She should be a 5th grader but is doing solid 3rd grade work.

Here's a link to a program called Language for Learning. I have a dear friend who's used this with her 5yo dd ASD with wonderful results. It's all about learning the necessary language skill to make higher order learning possible. If you click on the sample lesson menu button you'll see video clips of various lesson and the placement test. It's normally used in a pre-k classroom, but can easily be adapted for at home use. The program is really expensive if purchased from SRA and it can be a hassle to buy from them, but it's frequently available on e-bay. The older edition is really as good as the newer addition.

Just a suggestion.:001_smile:

  • 2 weeks later...

Darcy - I read your blog post and I'm curious where you ordered from. Was it one or two sites or were you all over the place to find all those things? There were a couple things (tactile letters, the tall alpha letters to decorate, etc) that I'd be interested in getting for my son.

Hi Emmy,

I'm sorry it took so long to reply. I haven't been back to the boards in awhile.

I ordered from two places:

http://www.lakeshorelearning.com - the tactile letters and numbers, the touch board, the letters to decorate.

rainbowresource.com - the rest! :)

Hope this helps!
