Potter's School- Advance Composition

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm considering this for my son's 10th grade year. I see there are several instructors. Are some better than others. Also, if I do this course as well as TOG then I would off course, leave off the writing but do the literature component. Would I just put English II or would I have 2 credits: one for Advanced Composition and another for 20th century literature?

I have one daughter who has completed Adv. Comp. with Mrs. Troxell, and another daughter currently taking the same course (also with Mrs. Troxell). The class is excellent and quite rigorous. Mrs. Troxell includes writing rules that are extremely restrictive, but the kids do eventually get used to them and eventually become better writers as a result.

In my case, I've just added in some literature to the year and treated it as "English III" on their transcripts.

Bottom line is that Advanced Comp. with Mrs. Troxell is a first class course.

HTH. :)

We have not done The Potter's School Advanced Compostion, but have done other English/Lit classes with them - one with Mrs. Troxell which was excellent. They are very full classes - definitely a credit all on their own. We also do TOG. Last year we did Year 2 and didn't do the writing, but did most of the reading, discussion, and tests, plus one paper. I thought it would just be .5 credit, but I kept track of hours and it was easily a full credit, so gave two English credits. This year we are doing 20th Century, plus my dd is doing a different TPS writing course, so imagine we will end up with two English credits again. (She has pretty much had two English credits every year, but that is her strongest area.) Both TPS and TOG are very full programs, so if you do most of the TOG as assigned, I would give two credits.
