Janice in NJ
Have you seen some of Lori D's posts on literature. I would start here http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105262&highlight=american+literature And then run a search on her posts. Lots of great ideas from her and lots of back-n-forth with other folks can be found where she intersects with others. Peace, Janice Enjoy your little people Enjoy your journey
Jenn in CA
To me you can't get more American than Mark Twain. We just did Huck Finn and I have a book of his short stories. Even though Tom Sawyer is often considered a children's book, Mark Twain's wit is actually very sophisticated. Also the Scarlet Letter is a classic pick. FloridaLisa
Some of the American Lit we enjoyed most off the top of my head: Twain Scarlett Letter Uncle Tom's Cabin To Kill a Mockingbird (a definite do-not-miss) Farenheit 451 Night Lots of great American short stories And two great American historical novels that aren't *lit* but are excellent reads: Killer Angels, Shaara Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, Dee Brown HTH, Lisa
