Myra
Athenaze: Intro to Ancient Greek Does anyone know if there is a pronounciation guide CD for this program? If there isn't, what would you suggest my son use to supplement "Athenaze: Intro to Ancient Greek" so he can hear the oral language? Thanks, Myra
Nicole M
We just started, and we use this online tool: http://leserables.tripod.com/audiofilesA/indexA.html Are you using the latest edition? I was so disappointed that the teacher's guide sold on Amazon is not compatible with the 2nd edition. When I wrote to Oxford U Press, they said they were about to pull the teacher's guide off the market, because, you know, you have to have a terminal degree to get one. Dang, they were a little rude, too. So we're using the first edition, which does not have a workbook. A little disappointing.
Nicole M
By the way, there are other audio sources online. We liked this guy's voice. I found one fella earlier this summer who said the vocabulary words in Greek and then in English. This one, the one I linked, does not, he just says the Greek. But I can't find that other fellow now! If you find that link, let me know. He was a college professor. Apparently many of them who teach Greek set up a website with audio and other resources. A little googling pays off in a big way. Jenn in CA
by telling them I was a homeschooler. I forget who I called, but the phone rep even said "Oxford is supportive of homeschoolers so we will give you a free copy." But it was hard to get to that point! I had a long, painful, circular email correspondence with a very rude woman at OUP. I will try calling! Thank you.
Melissa B
I believe I purchased the 2nd edition teacher's book from Rainbow Resource. Have you tried them?
Nicole M
Why oh why oh why did I not ask y'all about this when I was torturing myself trying to reason with OUP?! Dang. :banghead:
Nicole M
Oh, Hecuba! That was not very gracious of me. I'm sorry. I should have said thank you for heads-up about the Teacher's Guide at Rainbow. And I do thank you! Now I just have to decide whether to ditch the first edition and spring for the 2nd (with workbook!) or stick with what we're doing. And I apologize for the massive hijack. Myra
Thanks everyone! We're just starting the Athenzae this week as it took us that long to find the matching TE, Student's text, and Workbook.....we bought it in dribbles as we found it - except couldn't find the TE (and we definitely need an answer key!). THen I remembered about Rainbow Resources (as I used to purchase more there when the kids were younger!) and....there was everything. Yikes ! I could have saved a lot of time and frustration. That's why when I started the search for the audio CD after about 1/2 hour on google, I thought I'd ask here before I tortured myself again!! Any time you folks find out something new about Athenaze - hints at teaching, supplements, good websites - please shout & I'll do the same as we progress in our Greek! Thanks, Myra
Jenn in CA
Here at Oxford U. Press. Or, http://www.us.oup.com/us/catalog/general/subject/ClassicalStudies/ClassicalLanguages/Greek/?pr=10&pf=0&ss=title.asc&sf=featured&sd=asc&view=usa&ci=0195172329 Since the price says "$0.00" I'm not sure how to actually get it. I have the CD but don't remember purchasing separately.... it must have come w/the 2nd ed. textbook? I didn't find it very helpful either. Nicole's link looks good to me. Have you ever seen http://www.kidsgreek.com? It has audio. It might be a little young for a high schooler.
Kareni
Those of you who have a child studying Greek might be interested in knowing about this site which was recommended by my daughter's Greek teacher. It's hosted by Eton (the English school that has been around for a while). Review site for Ancient Greek My daughter found the Vocabulary Tester to be particularly helpful. Nicole M
I believe I purchased the 2nd edition teacher's book from Rainbow Resource. Have you tried them? My copy arrived the other day! Thank you so much for pointing me to Rainbow Resource. I find their catalogue overwhelming and their website not-so-user-friendly, so don't use them much, and it did not occur to me to check there. The second edition teacher's manual is much better than the first edition, and very helpful. Again, thanks!
