BJU Biology. How long?

Recommended Posts

For those of you who have used BJU Biology, I'm wondering how quickly you were able to work through it?

Even though my dd enjoys watching science related shows (Nova, Teaching Company's Joy of Science, Myth Busters, etc.) this is her first textbook course. I've looked at the suggested "speed" in the book and there is no way I feel like we can cover the material with understanding if we try to cover it that quickly. We are doing the course on our own (no DVDs, no co-op). I am also reading along and am amazed at how much reading there is to do each day.

BTW, dd isn't complaining, but she is feeling a wee bit overwhelmed by the amount of work. I'm also having her define the words and answer the review questions using a word document. I gave her the choice of speeding things up by writing in the book (underlining definitions and answers), but she chose to continue with the word document to keep the book nice for the next sister down.

Just wondering if finishing Biology during a school year is realistic or not.

Thanks!

I know what you mean - I got my dd BJU Biology for this year and it looks quite overwhelming to me, too. We haven't started it yet. I did get the DIVE CD-ROM to help with lectures, after some great advice from ladies on this board.

I also decided that we're going to skip the several chapters on human anatomy this year, though my dd is very interested in anatomy. I am going to carry them over into next year, add some other resources I already have (science and living books), do anatomy-related labs, and call it an intro to anatomy course. It may only take a semester, but it will relieve some of the "overwhelmingness" of trying to do the whole course this year.

Also, we are not going to be able to do some of the labs - many of them, actually - because they just aren't practical without a fully-equipped lab. We're going to do what we can.

I must admit that having a newborn is influencing my decision here, but even if I didn't, this course is a heavy load!

HTH!
