Is this enough for my 9th grader?

Is this enough do you think? First year homeschooling from public school

History: Beautiful Feet Ancients. I am counting it as history and lit. (the people at BF said they count it as one credit towards lit)

Geography: One sem. with Abeka

English/Grammar: Abeka

Math: Teaching Textbooks Algebra one

Science: Abeka Physical Science

Vocab/Spelling ACE Word Building (because she loves these!)

Writing: have not decided yet. Either Wordsmith or Understand Writing. I am waiting to get UW in the mail to see which I prefer.

Health with Abeka one sem.

I am also assigning her 6 book reports thru her Abeka English course

What do you all think?

Carolyn,

A few things I see:

1) I have done BF and like it. The only thing it lacks in the literature department is the literary analysis (things like plot, irony, poetry analysis, character analysis, etc.). If your daughter hasn't learned this, you could accomplish this by getting A Beka's 10th grade World Literature. The beginning of this text goes very nicely with Beautiful Feet Ancients, that is what we used together. You could do half of the text this year, the other half next year because you are doing a lot of whole books.

2) Are you doing the WTM four year cycle? If not, you may want to plan your history for high school. I ended up short on covering all time periods of history because I did a whole year of ancients (had already done geography, then did US and Govt./Econ., luckily he was young in his grade and we both decided to add a year, then we did world history).

3) I am only seeing a total of four classes (I guess five with double in social studies): English, Math, Science, Social Studies. You are heavy in the Language Arts, that is my problem. It was suggested to me to rotate the different language arts items. Doing too much of the vocabulary and grammar came at the expense of composition for us last year....

4) A Beka is pretty good with composition, you may not need anything else, if you get another program, you will need to skip A Beka's composition. You can also split the grammar book over two years (a suggestion from a friend of mine), A Beka has a lot of repeat. Also, this friend goes back a year or two on the grammar, a 9th grader would be doing 7th or 8th gr. grammar.

5) A semester of keyboarding and a semester of computer apps is common for 9th grade. If your daughter types well and knows Microsoft Office, then this can be another credit.

Others may break things down differently than I did... let's see what others say!

Hope this helps!

Susan

I would add in something about Literary Terms and consider doing one or two less book reports and add two research papers (one each semester) to the Science Course. If you are following Abeka's lesson plans and my memory isn't failing me, I think it covers doing one research project. It has been 4 years and I don't remember. Other than that I think it looks great.
