Help! Food stuck in my throat since last night!

Recommended Posts

I've been sick since last week and my throat is swollen. I was eating raw garlic on a slice of sprouted bread w/some olive oil and after I ate that I felt like there was something stuck in my throat. It's still there today and I have an appointment w/an ear, nose, and throat specialist tomorrow. The doctor today diagnosed me w/larnygitis. I had a steroid shot only because we hope it may reduce the swelling in my throat and help the food become dislodged. So far it hasn't done that.

Does anyone know how I can get this thing unstuck myself? It really hurts!

Thanks!!

This happened to my Mom and she went into the emergency room. They gave her soda pop (I'm pretty sure just regular coke). There is something in it that is supposed to make the throat get a bit larger and the food can go down.

It worked for her.

Hope you are already doing better.

I'm the same as earlier. I'm drinking a Coke right now! Thanks!

OK, he said that if you scratched the back of your throat, it can feel just like you have something stuck there. Is that possible? Did the ENT Dr. see anything? If you really do have something in there, it needs to be removed, as it can puncture the esophagus.

Hopefully, you're better!

I see the ENT doctor tomorrow morning. I hope it's just a scratch. I was coughing as I was eating so I guess it's possible. I just thought if I scratched it, it would be better by now. How long does it take for the pain to subside?

Well, if you're drinking a Coke and swallowing it okay, that's a good sign. If your throat was tender anyway, and then you scratched it, it could hurt for awhile. And if it was swollen, then it would have been even easier to injure.

DH says that most of the time, when he has to remove something, the patient isn't able to swallow their own secretions because of the blockage. I think the last thing he removed was a piece of lettuce (at midnight last Saturday) but it's often meat. It's possible that it can be something small enough to still allow for swallowing, but usually, whatever it is interferes. So it's a good thing that you're able to drink.

This is not much help, but just my experience. I was eating popcorn a couple of months ago and laughed and one of the little shell pieces on the popcorn went down and got stuck in my throat. I know how annoying and painful it is. I tried to find advice online and was unlucky. My eventually went away after a couple of days. It really felt so awkward, like it was suction cupped on.

Well, anyway I hope you find relief and try not to stress to much, it will easily be remedied I am sure.

I drank several Cokes last night and 2 doses of Alka Seltzier. By morning, I didn't feel like there was anything there. The ENT didn't scope me since I was doing better. If I'm not all the way better by next week, he'll scope me then. As I was leaving his office I started feeling the sensation a little bit but by this time my drainage in my throat had picked up. I think I may have injured it and it's healing. It could have been gastro related but that would be unlikely since I haven't had any of those symptoms before. I guess we'll just have to take a wait and see approach. At least it doesn't hurt like crazy every time I swallow.

Thanks to everyone who replied with suggestions or sympathy. It really did help!! :D
