What order should we do things

Recommended Posts

My son will be starting VT at the end of this month and he is in ST already. I just ordered Barton's for reading and should be starting that in a week. I also bought the Sound Reading CD and am thinking of Earobics(after his audio eval next week) and someday, something like Audiblox if needed.

What I don't know is what order to do things. It seems like a lot and I don't want to overwhelm him. I have no idea how often these things should be done either. Is there something else that I am missing that might benefit him?

I know I wont have a full picture until we see the neuro on the 24th and even then we probably wont have any answers for a while. I just don't want to do nothing in the meantime.

Well, we don't use any of those things so I can't comment on them. I would though be ready to take some time off IF the doctor decides to start meds. We find that 2-3 days after every med increase things just don't go as well, then they get better than they were before. I just know that and plan a light day for that time.

We use the I See Sam (RALP) reading program, Apples and Pears/Dancing Bears for spelling and reading drills and then ACE for the rest of their stuff.

I have Earobics, the first level if you are interested. The kids liked it but I can't say it really helped.

Has he had an occupational therapy eval? In general, OT and ST are the first therapies that you want to start working on intensively. If OT is not needed, or when OT is nearing completion, VT comes into the picture. (In a complex situation such as yours, I would not start VT before getting an OT evaluation.)

If your son can do the Sound Reading CD, do not get Earobics. Earobics is much more fundamental and would not provide any added benefit if he can handle the SR CD.

You would not want to start Audiblox until OT and VT are completed. You do not have to wait for ST to be completed before starting Audiblox. Basically, this training is the last step before academics. You want to wait until all sensory-level deficits (motor, vision, auditory) have been reduced as much as possible.

I don't know how long daily Barton sessions would last. The Sound Reading CD requires only 20 minutes 3 times a week, so it's easy to fit into a schedule. (I personally prefer 20 minutes 5 days a week, but the developers seem to think that's not a good idea. I could get into their reasons and my reasons, but will spare you that. :) )

I'm not an expert on seizures, but I do know that small seizures can take place many times a day without being noticeable, and that this type of frequent small seizure greatly interferes with learning and memory. You might want to take Barton pretty slowly until you get the neurological eval results.
