DD15 has decided she wants to learn Latin

Recommended Posts

Has she had much grammar?

My daughter used Wheelock's last year, with the accompanying workbook. Both are easily and inexpensively found at Barnes and Noble or Borders (or Amazon!). It's a grammar based approach though, so it helps to have a pretty solid grammar background. There's also a companion book called "Comprehensive Guide to Wheelock's Latin" by Dale Grote, which reviews the grammar and explains the chapter materials. A motivated student could use those three tools and have a self-teaching course. (I say motivated because it's not easy, but the text and workbook were originally designed to be self-teaching.)

My son 13 has just requested the same thing. I think I have decided after much research to use : Getting Started with Latin: Beginning Latin for Homeschoolers and Self-Taught Students of Any Age by Linney

This goes rather slowly but is a very easy way to teach yourself the basics of Latin - appropriate for all ages. My 13yo dd did this book last year and had fun with it. This year we're doing Ecce Romani.
