HollyDay
We have done a literature approach to history. As we approach high school this year, dd has asked for a spine, not a lit approach. What are some good spines for high school??
jlovebaker
Ancient History spine geared toward high school students and adults. Looks fascinating!
jibaker103
World History: The Human Odyssey is a high school level text and Western Civilization is a college level text high school students use for AP World History. Both a written by Jackson Spielvogel.
Susan C.
We have used the following: Streams of Civilization, Vol. 1 (don't like Vol. 2, different author) History of US, Joy Hakim (my son didn't like BJU US History, but I thought it was a good text) BJU World History We just bought World History: The Human Odyssey mentioned above. I bought it used for $10 from a used seller on Amazon called gabooks. It looks like a great text, we are using it for an encyclopedia type of thing right now, we are doing world history in one year, and at 1100 pgs. it would be hard to read it in a year. Wish I had read WTM earlier, this text would be wonderful as a spine read over 4 yrs. with whole books. If you are a Christian, the text seems a little indifferent about things important to us, like Hebrew history and concepts of God, etc., but it would be expected from a secular text. It can be easily backed up with a Christian text if you want a more Christian view.
Vida Winter
We are using "A Short History of the World" by Roberts. It's not a textbook, though, just text - no photos. So in addition we've added National Geographic's A Visual History of the World. Course will be supplemented by Teaching Company lectures where needed. mschickie
BJU is pretty good basic high school text. I would not suggest Abeka at all. You could also look at some basic textbooks used in colleges such as American Promise or American Nation (by Garrety, I like this one alot and they have a good support website), for Western Civ, there is Western Heritage (by Kagan) which is really good. My3Boys
Seconding BJU. We used it for American History last year and it is an excellent text. Very thorough, although we used it along with Omnibus III.
