He may not like the idea, but I am thinking I should give him a comprehensive midterm and final exams this year at least in history and science. What do you do and why. I think it would have helped to review that info midway, rather than at the end when we were studying for the SAT Bio exam. Do you give your high school dc midterms and finals. We are using TOG, so the finals are included in the Evaluations CD. There are also midterms and finals with the Apologia science texts. I don't do much testing in the younger grades, but I think it's an important motivation in high school. It's also a necessary preparation for college. FWIW - my college age dd encouraged me to continue giving these tests. She did well in her first year of college, but really needed to learn how to study for several tests in the same week. LoriM Posted August 10, 2009 Share Posted August 10, 2009 I have my students write their own tests by compiling test questions and reviews from each unit they study. Usually my girls would write 10-12 questions per chapter (science/history particularly), varying from short essay to longer essay answers. I would generate random numbers, and pull 10% of the questions for a midterm review and for a final review. (But we didn't call them tests--just assessment reviews. :) ) Typically, they gave these tests to themselves, and assessed their own recall. I think it depends on your goal for assessment. Yes, "tests" are a necessary part of high school. But I wanted my girls to develop the kind of mind for the material that they could foresee the questions they'd be asked. And yes, I did occasionally throw in a question they never thought about...I'm not as kind as this sounds. :) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

However for my text books (Kennedy the American Pageant and Giancoli Physics principles with applications)I have chapter tests but they do not include comprehensive midterms or finals. I guess I will just include about 2-3 questions from the chapter tests to make a comprehensive exam. I don't want to make my own questions up because I don't have time to find the answers to questions I would make up ( I have the answer key to the chapter tests).
