Larson combined Elementary and Intermed Alg.

Recommended Posts

You might want to cross-refer to the CD website. I used to have the Larson Elementary and Intermediate Algebra text, but sold it. If I remember correctly, chapters 1-5 are from Elementary Algebra and the remaining chapters from Intermediate Algebra. I decided against using the book I wasn't sure how to give credits. It seemed to me like it began with Algebra 1 went through 1/2 of Alg 1, then suddenly jumped to Alg 2 for the second half. I don't know if I'm making any sense, but if you look at the TOC of your book and cross-refer to the CD website you'll see what I mean.

Oh, great...I've only gotten the book in the mail. The cd's aren't here yet. I was going to use this as the Alg I book for an 8th grader and Alg II as a 10th grader.. So will this not work?? What stuff did it skip. Nobody mentioned this in the Chalkdust for cheaper thread. Sigh.

I think MOST the combo books are great for a student moving into Algebra 2 who needs to go back and review Algebra 1 (maybe they were a weak student in Algebra 1). I have not seen this particular one so I'm speaking from my other experiences.

I prefer the separate texts for individual years. There is overlap between the two texts--and the combo book cuts that out. There is GREAT benifit with this overlap---most Algebra 1 give the students a taste (the easier side) of the more abstract concepts--and Algebra 2 reviews the basics ('Hey-- you remember this stuff and it was easy now lets take it deeper') Usually the students get to practice their Algebra 1 for a year while doing Geometry... that reinforces the basics too.

The combo texts are NOT ( usually ) 2 complete programs under the same cover. The range of concepts will come 'close' to complete--but they do leave material out (mostly review and gentle introduction of concepts).

I have to respectfully disagree, at least with regard to the Larson Combined text. I have compared all 3 books, and the combined text does not leave anything out.

I originally bought the separate Alg II book & CDs (Intermediate Algebra), then when I couldn't find the CDs for Alg I, I bought the combined CDs and textbook. I noticed that most of the chapters were the same in the Intermediate and Combined books, so I bought the separate Alg I text (Elementary Algebra) just to be sure I wasn't missing anything -- and I can confirm that it's ALL covered in the Combined text.

I have compared the TOCs of all three textbooks, and the first 10 chapters of Elementary Algebra line up exactly with the first 10 chapters of the Combined text. I flipped through both books comparing pages, and the text, problems, and illustrations were identical. If a student does the first 10 chapters of the Combined text they will have covered exactly the same material as the separate Elementary Algebra text.

The first 3 chapters of the separate Intermediate Algebra text provide a condensed review of the material covered in the first 7 chapters of both the Elementary and Combined texts. They are intended as a review of basic algebra for students who did Geometry the previous year and need a quick refresher. Chapter 4 of the Intermediate text exactly matches Chapter 8 of the Combined text, and the remaining chapters of both books line up perfectly.

A student who wants to use the Combined text for Algebra I should complete Chapters 1-10. A student who wants to use it for Algebra II should skim through the first 3 chapters if they need a review, then do Chapters 4 through 13. Both students will have covered exactly the same material that is in the separate textbooks. A student who does not take a year out to do geometry between Alg I & II can work straight through all 13 chapters of the Combined text and will have covered all of Algebra I & II. A student who previously did a "light" version of Algebra I could also go do all 13 chapters of the Combined text to provide a more thorough review of Alg I as well as completing Alg II.

Thanks Jackie. That is exactly what I needed to know. My oldest did TT Algebra I and 2/3 of TT Algebra II ( which I counted as Algebra I) in 7th and 8th grade. He is currently doing Chalkdust Geometry. I told him I would have him skim through the chapter and then take the test and if he gets an A we would go to the next chapter. If he sees something he doesn't know, then we will stop. So it sounds like I will do that until chapter 3 or 4 and then start from there.

This is exactly what i am using this book for. Ds did TT 1 & 2 in 7th and 8th gr. then Geometry in 9th. He needed a review of Alg. 1...(couldn't hurt!) so, this book really fit the bill for what i needed. i really didn't WANT to re-do all of Alg. 1.

Also, I noticed a LOT of Geometry review in this book, which is going to be very important when iyt comes time to do the SAT's.

From what I see in this book, the first 3 chapters cover Alg. 1 quickly as a review. They cover many concepts...then the remaining 10 chapters cover alg. 2. The last 2 chapters in the book will be covered again in Pre-Calc. So...I didn't schedule those 2 chapters for the school year. We will cover those over the summer prior to the next book...

This was exactly what i found out. The combined text is very thorough...and it is used in the CC here for students who need to cover Algebra before going into pre-calc.
