parias1126
Does anyone have any suggestions for American History? I am doing a classical education with my youngest children, but my oldest I would imagine would be too difficult to change the way we educate since she is so set in her ways. I ended up purchasing LifePacs this year. She started....we are through 3 days and she HATES them! We always used Abeka, but I decided I didn't want to use Abeka this year again. It seems as though the last couple years, we are done with school for the year and still have ABeka History to do! When I am done... I want to be done! Anyway, please give me all the American History suggestions you may have! I only spent maybe $30 on the LifePacs so its no huge loss (thank goodness!). creekland
We used Notgrass and really liked it.
parias1126
We used Notgrass and really liked it. Just went to the site to check it out. It looks fantastic, but we are already taking a Comp & Lit class outside of the home so we would only need Bible and History. Is there a way around that? Susan C.
Oh, textbook history, we keep starting out with it, and then it gets snubbed :) I don't mind the BJU US History book, but my son opted to do the enormous amount of reading with Beautiful Feet to avoid it. And, we started school this week, and BJU World History has been snubbed by my daughter.... I did order a used copy of Human Odyssey, and am looking at it. I bought it for back up and don't have a teachers edition to go with it :( Both of my kids have read Joy Hakim's History of US series and really enjoyed it. Depending on your requirements, you may be able to get high school credit for that. Definitely a more enjoyable read.
creekland
Just went to the site to check it out. It looks fantastic, but we are already taking a Comp & Lit class outside of the home so we would only need Bible and History. Is there a way around that? Absolutely. Each section (in the latest version anyway) is a separate test (English, History, Bible) so the English ones could be dropped. Ditto that for essays about the books. There are other essays on just the history, but I never considered those for the English grade. We wrote essays in history too. I can't remember if there was a book question or two on a couple of the history tests, but if there were, you could simply omit those if the book hadn't been read from other classes. I THINK the earlier version combined history/English on some of the tests, but that's hearsay as we only did the latest version.
mschickie
We just used BJU's American History. Sd really liked it. We had used Abeka for World History the year before and she hated that. The student activities book for BJU really helped alot too. I had looked at Notgrass and Beautiful Feet but those were too much reading for her. As a former high school History teacher I also think that as a textbook goes BJU's is pretty well set up. I would not say it was an honors book but a good standard History. Their tests are also pretty well laid out. I could not stand Abeka's test and ended up making my own up last year
Chris in PA
We used Notgrass and really liked it. :iagree: I second Notgrass. It got the job done for my child who likes textbooks. We did not do the literature or the Bible. I had her answer the questions at the end of each chapter, take the quizzes and tests. And I loved the original source material. I also included mapping and a timeline.
Robin in DFW
America: A Narrative History. She recommends the one volume book, but I alread had one volume, then found the other, so it will do. I also purchased a study guide from Norton.
parias1126
I had my DD look at the online samples this morning for the Notgrass History and she said this is what she wants. I can't believe it. I thought for sure she would say it was too much reading. She is taking a outside class for Comp & Lit and says she wants to also do the literature part of Notgrass along with the history for an extra English credit. I am thinking this is way too much. I thought she hated reading!
Phoatogirl
We will be using America, the Last Best Hope by William Bennett. There is a companion website called RoadMap to the Last Best Hope.
aprilinparis
In the for what it's worth category, we're using Sonlight's Core 100 for American history. It's a bunch of great books that you can analyze & discuss, and includes the Hakim books, which are enjoyable. Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents :) Blessings to you,

Alphabetika
Notgrass! Skip the lit and Bible if you need to, but be sure to use the source document book. Excellent!
