Tough Decissions.

I used to be one of the Regina's in Missouri.

Life has thrown some bumps at us. We had to deviate from WTM plan to keep our kids out of traditional classrooms. They have excelled and we are moving back to those plans for our younger two.

Now we have reached a pass. My son will be 9th grade. The money is just not there to properly home school him. He wants to go to high school. We have agreed to allow this. We have him registers be things do not look good already. They won’t take my word that he is at a higher level.

I wish I had gone in lying saying he was a sophomore. What would they have done without freshman credits…..

Anyway, I can see this being a very short year for him. I was looking at an on-line option. The one option that fits our budget and is accredit is not much of an education, it would get him graduated sooner. She is a smart kid. I believe he has a good foundation and in a year or two have no problem working at the college level. Would you choose a subpar education to avoid high school?

Seriously this councilor told me it would be ok all the rest of the kids will be doing it. UMMMMMM all the kids do drugs it is still ok. It was such a contradictory of ideas.

I do not have a shopping list from them. They do not have copy of rule books. I ended up getting information about the dress code from the janitor. They do not have a map printout out of the school. I could go on here about the complaints.

They use IDs. If my son doesn’t have it showing like it gets tucked into his jacket, or put his jacket over it….they will fine him $1.75. And he could be charged that multiple times a day. I don’t see how that is even legal. I am getting rooms they might have rule books for him to sign as a “contract†ummmm minors cannot enter contracts.

Maybe I am being over critical and not liking our situation. I wish I could afford a better plan. I wish I felt confident to make a transcripts of the work we do. Give grades, et.

High school does not have to be really expensive. I have found many of the books at the library and a used bookstore. If you follow some of the Well Trained Mind many of the books for literature and history are classics and easily found at library sales or used bookstores. If you can't locate math and science books locally you can look on the sale boards here or even used book suppliers like Albiris, Abe Books, Half, and others. I have found math books for $5 for example. You don't have to do outside classes either. After one of my children's not so wonderful time in high school,I would do whatever I could to keep them at home during this time.

I was reluctant to do transcripts since I was afraid, I guess, but I found that it is not hard. HSLDA has blank transcripts on their website: http://www.hslda.org/highschool

I used one of these. The local community college didn't even want to see it, but I have a pretty embosser for the final transcript and everything.:)

I wish you luck, whatever you decide.

High school does not have to cost any more than middle school. 9th and 10th grade cost under $100 together. Used text books and the library were our friends.

From Abebooks.com:

Algebra Dolciani c. 1981 $1 + $2.95 S/H

Ancient History

a la WTM getting books from the library

Grand Total: $16.18

You will not need any more pens, notebooks etc at home than you do for school, so there is no added expense.

High school truly doesn't have to be expensive at all! You do not have to enroll in anything! You can make up your own transcript. I used a blank transcript provided by a college my dd was applying to. There are many, many resources available free on line or you can buy used curriculum, borrow curricula, and of course use the library extensively. There is no reason in the world to settle for less because of lack of funds! Things I would expend money on: science lab materials or find a class your student can attend; math tutor or math dvds (if you don't feel you can teach higher level math or you could swap lessons with another person who can teach it and you can provide some other expertise in some other way), a subscription to netflix so he can watch Shakespeare plays and documentaries that tie in with your studies (also use the library for this). At some point your son can starting working at a job and can help defray any costs (for example if he wants to attend a community college in Jr and Sr year).

High school seems scary when starting out but really it is a joy to homeschool! You see your student taking their own education into their own hands. I wouldn't send my kid to high school if you paid me!!!!! They have so much more freedom to follow their own interests; they don't have to deal with the dehumanizing idiocy of the institution, they don't have to deal with the shallowness, cruelty, or melodrama of their peers. I tell you it is like exchanging freedom for slavery!

Regina,

You don't feel confident to do it, but you most certainly CAN do it. I would just scrap that school. You're gonna be much more stressed out trying to figure out how to make that work than you will learning to make a transcript!

I have never made a plan for $16.18 but that looks like a pretty good plan. Seriously, you're gonna spend A LOT more on public school. I'd splurge for SWB's History book. :)

You can do this. Seriously.
