College Prep Question

Recommended Posts

My kids are still a bit young for this, but I have been trying to look ahead: what have you done or plan to do for college prep? Should we enroll part time in the high school or local college? Should we be considering a post graduate year at a boarding school for smoother transition? Do we need to order AP or IB curricula? Hire an SAT/ACT tutor?

Thanks for the help!

Oh Boy, lots of tough questions! I would say keep all options open as each kid and family are different. As far as part time high school - we don't have any around here so can't help with that. Community College is an option many take. We didn't because the CC's around us are all pretty liberal and I just didn't want ds's last years at home to be that way. As far as Ap goes - you can take as ap test at the end of the year by contacting your local high school and signing up for the test day. You can prep with whatever text you feel would work. If your kids want to take the Ap test route then yes, good texts books are important but I would say more important is if they want to do it - are they motivated to study for it . . . When they are in high school, start looking at college web sites that you think they might want to go to or they have expressed interest in and see what their admission requirements are (especially see if they have extra requirments for home schoolers - a few do, but certainly I found the majority don't).

Don't let high school unnerve you. It can be done! It is actually fun! I enjoy and treasure the times my ds and I had together! Lets see - together we accomplished some tough things like high school math and physics! We even had some good discussions about literature and history!

I'd recommend reading a good high school book, like Home Designed High School, as well as re-reading those chapters of the WTM text. You'll find expert choices, and can tailor design your child's plan to fit his or her needs. One size does NOT fit all.
