Holly IN
I want to get a planner for my soon to be 9th grader. I have looked at some of them at Walmart. They do not look like what I am looking for. Anybody have a favorite?? Thanks!! Holly
Leonor
I just bought my son the Student AT-A-Glance weekly/monthly planner at Staples. It goes with the school year--from July through June 2010. We watched the Teaching Company's How to be a Superstar Student DVD and are trying to implement what he has learned and get into a routing of using a planner. jelbe5
I purchased the student planner from Christian Light for my rising 9th grader. It is Christian in nature. It has spaces for subjects and room to add some additional subjects. It also has a place to put reminders and appointments and a self-check for character/attitude which is something my dd needs some help with ! :001_smile: Notgrass also sells a planner which I think is pretty popular. I know you can see samples on their webpage. Not sure if you can see samples of the Christian Light planner . . . I saw and purchased it at my state convention. AnitaMcC
I bought a week at a glance student planner at Barnes & Noble. It is simple... plenty of room for the kids to write their work for each day of that week. And the corners are perforated so they can tear the tip off easily to find the current week they are on. It was about $10.
chalkboard
We use one called Student Homework Book sold by Rainbow Resource. It is about 7" x 11", spiral bound. When opened, the left side of the spiral binding has days Mon.-Wed. with about eight or so lines for each day to list assignments. All subjects are listed for each day. From left to right there are the headings: Subject, Homework, and Due. There is a small box to the far right end of each line to fill in when assignment is completed. I color in the box with a red pencil. Seeing all those red boxes appear as work is completed has been very motivating and quite satisfying for my dc, and they aren't even little anymore! Hey, I'm the mom and I get a charge out of seeing all those red boxes, too! The right side of the spiral binding has days Thurs, and Friday, along with an about 3" x 5" open area for any other notes you may want to make. The book costs $3.25 when I bought several of them a few years ago. Such a deal! If you'd like to see this assignment book and others, my guess is that Rainbow Resource web site will show a sample page of the assignment books they sell. Frontier Mom
Can I jump in and ask for clarification here? Hope the OP doesn't mind. I know SWB also recommends a separate planner. Here is my dilemma: I use something like High School Home School Planner which has a place for five days and notes to the side. I keep my calendar on the computer and print out monthly ones as updated. Also, we keep a white board on the fridge where we write down the things coming up that week. With all that and the fact that my dc's don't drive, do they need an additional planner? I mean, they can't go without me to appts. etc. because they rely on me for transportation. So, do they need a planner in addition to the weekly school assignments or is that sufficient? I'm just confused because last year I bought my ds's all a planner which never got used. For us now it is easier to coordinate as a family. I guess I'm just needing clarification here. I should also add my ds's are not too great at keeping up with things anyway so I'm not sure I want to spend the extra $.

I do not mind at all!! :) I think the point was that the students start learning how to manage their time by using a day planner to plan their studies and their outside activities. This helps them be prepared for college. It is what I got out of from SWB's class in Cincy. Holly
chalkboard
Student Homework Book sold by Rainbow Resource: No, it doesn't have any space for extra curricular activities or a calender page. At the top of each page it does have a 'week beginning' line where you can write in the date of the Monday for that week.
Leonor
The point of the planner for the student is to teach them time management. In the Teaching Company lecture, the professor talks about the students getting to college and not being able to manage it at all. Too many deadlines. I strongly recommend this if you can find it at your library. He teaches them to use a planner to be able to plan ahead for deadlines in the future. To be able to see when they have free time and schedule working on different projects. This would mean scheduling your extra curricular activities into your weekly planner because these are time commitments that you will not have available for other things. AnitaMcC
Does this one have pages for extra-curricular activities? Holly It has Mon- Thrus on left page and Fri-Sun on right page. The days are listed horizontally. It has about 6 lines for each day. Also on right page is the previous month, current month, and next month calendar. It is not broken down into times. In back of book it has several pages for notes and address/phone list. It is an 18 month calendar July 09-Dec 10. I like that it is simple... no frills. It is mainly for them to list/schedule the week of school work. They can put little reminders in it for when they have activities... but it isn't the purpose of the book for us. What I do is have the twins write/plan out their week of doing their school work and they are to show it to me each Monday morning. I have a monthly calendar on my fridge and that is used for appointments and activities. This is so that everyone in family can have some idea of what each other is doing (and if they are lucky to get dinner cooked or are on their own for the people over the age of 17-LOL). Leonor
I went to the link. The only thing is that the free printable does not have the time. After much research, last week I gave in and used a coupon to buy the student at-a glance weekly/monthly planner at Staples to match what he uses on the lecture. Thanks for the link. This is pretty much what I do. I have the High School Home School Planner and I give my dc's (older ones) the assignments for the week. Then, they must fill in the week as to how to accomplish the assignments by day. I check over this to see if it is realistic, pointing out areas I think might be a struggle. We keep a monthly calendar on the fridge and a weekly "outside things" on a white board on the fridge. They also pencil them in on the bottom of the planner. I have the DVD "Superstar Student" but we haven't watched it yet. Maybe that will give me more guidance. Right now, it seems I am accomplishing about the same thing with the planner but maybe not. MicheleinMN
We kind of use 2 planners for high school. One is the day to day lesson plan/schedule book with page numbers, etc. for assignments. The other is a monthly academic planner to mark outside school activities and to schedule test days/major due dates. This way the student can see at a glance what is happening for the month, but has a day to day planner for breaking down the work. (with ds 17...he still needs help with breaking it down into workable daily pieces.) HTH

I used to use the Day at a Glance but now all my info. is on my calendar. If I am getting them ready for college in today's world, should I just insist they start keeping their info. on a computerized calendar? I joined Cozi.com and it has family calendars. I am thinking after reading through these that I might have them set up google calendars on their computers and manage them there. Also, they can't lose them that way!!;)

I went online and saw a few different ones so I want to get the one he discusses in the DVD. The only number I can find on it is Reorder number: 70-957G. It is an AT-A-Glance weekly/monthly planner. It has tabs on the side for each month. Has the complete calendar month then a 2 page spread for each week. M-Sun going accross the top and from 7a.m.-9p.m. going down the page. It is 81/2 x 11. You don't have to watch the entire DVD. You can watch this lesson first and then go back. It is lecture 7--The Master Schedule--Planning for Success. Hope that helps. Kareni
Holly IN asked "Planner for a high school student...your favorite?" The short answer is ... whatever will get used! You might present a selection for your child to look at to see what he/she might choose. That using part is much more difficult to implement. Frontier Mom
By reading the posts, it seems some use a planner with days only and a blank space. Seems others are using planners with the time slots for each day, broken down by hours, etc. Just wondering as I try to decide which to get. After looking at suggestions above, seems there are some of each. Can anyone tell me which you use and if it meets your needs?
Rhea
I'm looking for software to print out our own planner pages. My daughter has several classes either outside of home or online and I would like to have those time periods blocked out each week. I know that can be done on a class schedule page, but she's chosen such a heavy load this year I think it will help if every week those hours are blocked out so she can schedule her study time around them. Ideally I'd like the days of the week across the top with time slots running down - I just want to print them out with her class commitments blocked out. If anyone knows of software to do this, please share. :) Rhea
tex-mex
I used to buy planners and got frustrated with them. This year, I went to: http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/hischl.htm and used the forms to create a weekly assignment sheet. Son follows it and checks off assignments & chores completed. I post it on his bedroom door at the beginning of the week. Collect it at the end of the week and collate them into a binder for records. You could probably also use Open Office, though I haven't used it personally. From what I understand, it has a program very similar to Outlook. Frontier Mom
Just an update, for whatever its worth. LOL I originally found planners at Walmart for $4 and bought them. However, after reading the posts here, I relooked at them and questioned their usefullness because they only have a blank for each day. Yesterday, I took them back and exchanged them for some at Walmart for $6.97 each that were for the year 2010 but have July through December 2009 extra. Each day has time broken down from morning to 6 pm. I think this will work exactly as I need for the upcoming year. Thanks for all the great discussion. Rhea
In case anyone is interested, calendars.com has the New York Public Library 2010 Student Calendar. I decided to go with this one because it has class schedule pages, monthly, weekly, and for each day on the weekly there is a section for Assignments, one for Study Schedule and one for Extracurricular. $10.99, free shipping on orders over $20, and no affiliation. :) (This planner does not have apt. times.)
