Children have the opportunity to do Math-U-See at coop

Recommended Posts

I was excited even though we have been using Teaching Textbooks until I started worrying that it would confuse them. I was going to switch to possibly Jacobs this year. The concepts will be new to my children (Pre-Algebra and Geometry). Would I be doing damage if I put them in a new curriculum that is taught is such a different way for those subjects?

Not at all! It's great for kids to solve problems from a wide variety of different texts. Now, I'd be cautious about whether your co-op class meets a "full credit" for high school math, or whether this will simply be math enrichment. Evaluate that carefully, and I'm sure they'll do just fine. :)

We've only done MUS at the levels before pre-Algebra, but have almost always done it with a second program. I think this is a great idea, even with Algebra. I'm enjoying Life of Fred Beginning Algebra, but my dd has tried a few (she's nearly done, so hasn't tried LoF--that's for my second dd who will be starting Algebra sometime next fall; I plan to have each of my dc do Algebra 1 twice because they get there on the early side.) TT was not a good fit, but she has done well with Lial's Beginning Algebra, some Gelfand's & with an older Dolciani (the latter 2 she's doing for her second go-around with Algebra.)

Personally, I like switching programs around the pre-Algebra stage. For one thing, it helps you see if there are any holes in their understanding. For another, it helps develop mathematical thinking, and the thinking part of math is very important for developing logic and thinking skills.
