Recs. for a strong comprehensive English program for 10th grader?

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the forum. My daughter used Smarr Publisher's Ancient History comprehensive English/history program last yr----the books were strong but the rest of the program focused more on comprehension than on critical writing skills.

So we're on th ehunt again for something else out there. Any suggestions??? Has anyone used any of these I found listed in Rainbow Resource :Write Source, Saxon grammar & writing,Classical Writing, or IEW's student writing intensive??

Thanks,

Cindi

This is our first year of homeschooling and we are starting at high school (9th grade). For Language Arts we are using Writer's Choice Composition and Grammar with Glencoe Vocabulary for grade 10.

It looks complete and intensive and covers quite a bit of material. It also includes literature in the text at the end of each unit (approx 16 literature pieces). These are excerpts of literature but it is easy to get the whole book or even pick other books if you want more.

We are doing World Literature combined with our World History. I am just having them read the literature excerpts in the language arts text and answering the questions in text, do the grammar and composition and vocabulary workbooks. They will be doing writings with each of the composition units for a total of 6 papers and 1 research paper (which they are doing 5 research papers in the World History so the LA research paper will be with the history on this).

Smarr is literature, so although there is some writing, that is not its emphasis so yes, it will be lacking.

Each year of high school is assumed to cover literature and composition. Unless y'all really didn't like Smarr, my recommendation would be to continue with it and add something for writing, such as Writing Strands, or IEW.

Sorry, this is not what you are really looking to hear, but we ended up doing three different programs for high school English:

Grammar: Rod & Staff Grammar 9th and 10th grade books for 9th and 10th grade.

Writing: Lots of different things, but mainly IEW stuff. Over the years we used SWICC-C, Advanced Communication, High School Essay Intensive, and The Elegant Essay.

Literature: We used the WTM/WEM suggestions and read entire works of classic literature to coordinate with our Rhetoric-level 4-year history cycle.

This worked well for us! I'd recommend reading the new Well-Trained Mind (2009 edition) to see SWB's suggestions, many of which we used.

Blessings,
