Proper attire for scholarship testing, etc?

It's been eons since I went to college (or at least it feels like it). Now that my oldest is applying and being invited for group scholarship testing at various places a new question has come to mind. What should he wear???

I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that shorts and a t-shirt are out (esp since it'll be this winter), but would dockers casual fit the bill - or should he be prepared with more? I believe there is group testing, then individual interviews... and I'm not sure if they go straight from one to the other or if there would be time to change - or any of that.

Any experience from BTDT?

My ds wore a suit for scholarship interviews; my dd wore a feminine version of a suit. Pretty much everyone else they saw wore about the same -- a few guys wore blazers instead of a suit, but that was about all the variation they noted -- even though they did scholarship interviews at schools ranging from urban state schools to elite LAC's.

But testing might be different. If there is no interview involved, I don't know!

Out of curiosity: your student has yet to apply but is being invited for scholarship testing? I did not know such a thing happened. Are the invitations based on SAT score submissions or what other criteria?

We used to do alumni interviews with prospective students. Most came in suits or sportcoats or female equivalents. Some came in something like a long sleeve shirt with sweater and tie. I think one or two came in very casual clothing. One of them I remember as an unserious student and didn't recommend but the clothing was the least of the problem. That student also didn't know anything about the school and was very unclear about why she was applying. We conducted the interviews in our home at the time (different homes at different times). THere was no testing involved.

Sort of... at the colleges we've visited we've been told there will be scholarship testing and/or interviews and it's been highly implied that he will be invited, and yes, I'm presuming it's due to his SAT scores. Several schools have also waived their application fee, but I don't know if that's normal or unusual. We hadn't asked about that - they are just offering it.

I was just clothes shopping yesterday (my middle son's swimsuit broke... making it a real 'need' to get another one quickly). While I was waiting for him to try stuff on I was in the men's dept looking at clothes and this thought came to mind. I don't want him over or under dressed... I did the same process at Va Tech, but not only was it eons ago, I honestly haven't a clue what I wore - then too, things can change over the years.

It never hurts to be mentally prepared for my 'to do' list this fall.

Many thanks for your thoughts. We've been doing prospective student interviews in docker's casual... (no application yet - just considering schools stage, so probably one stage below what you're talking about). I hadn't even thought of doing more for this type of interview. However, no school we've talked to yet has told us we'd need a second interview for acceptance, so I'm not really sure. Scholarship testing/interviews seem a bit more 'formal' I guess - and more competitive.
