K in MI
I have LOF Beg. Algebra, and the Home Companion breaks it down into 108 lessons. I don't have the Advanced Alg. or Geometry books or companions, and was wondering how many lessons they have. For anyone who has used them, is it pushing things to finish all 3 in two years? Miss Marple
is it pushing things to finish all 3 in two years? I wouldn't think so. My rising 8th grader completed Beg. Alg. and is working through Adv. Alg. now (started in 7th). He will finish Adv. Alg. well before Christmas. So...1.5 years for the algebras will leave you another 1.5 for geometry. I think you can do it easily. Edited July 8, 2009 by CynthiaOK
nmoira
For anyone who has used them, is it pushing things to finish all 3 in two years?I haven't used them in schooling yet, but have gone through them myself. I'm pretty sure that you could do Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry in one year, making that four in three years.
Laura Corin
An email I got from the author said: LOF: Beginning Algebra (with its study guide, Fred's Home Companion: Beginning Algebra) are laid out in 108 lessons. Then advanced algebra, 101 lessons. Then LOF: Geometry which will take 8-14 months. It's a large topic with lots of new stuff. That sounds like a full year for the two algebras, then another full year for geometry. Calvin just finished Decimals and Percents, so I am starting him on Beginning Algebra straight away (we have two more weeks of term) in order to get a bit of a head start, as he goes to school in two years and I want him to be through the three books by then. Storm Bay
Well, I'm going through Beginning Algebra right now. I'm ignoring the Home Companion because for me this is all review. I did the first 2 chapters in one sitting for the first and 1.5 for the second (due to dc interruptions). However, given what my dd has already covered in math, I think that at the beginning of the book we'll be combining some of the lessons. It reviews things she already knows such as negative numbers, ratios, etc. But even if we did all the lessons, there are a lot more than 108 school days in a year, even if you go the ps school year length, so I don't see why you couldn't do 4 of them in 3 years. It would depend on how things go with the understanding and application of it. Of course, we also do math 5 days a week most of the time, and perhaps not everyone else does it that way. amtmcm
We'll be completing Beg Algebra in 1 semester doing 6 lessons per week with the Home Companion. Most lessons are typically about 12-15 problems so I don't think it's too much to complete 6 lessons a week. We're squeezing in TT Alg 2 for spring 2010 and fall 2010 and will complete LOF Adv Alg in Spring 2011 (again - 1 semester). I think it's very doable to complete both LOF Algebra courses in 1 year and complete LOF Geometry in the 2nd year. I personally think you may need to do some Algebra review after completing Geometry, but you could use something quick like "Painless Algebra" or quickly go back through LOF. My 2 cents,
