momofkhm
I got an ipod for Christmas and I am finally going through the iTunes store. What is a podcast? Why do I want one? Are some better than others? (Well, duh, of course!) So which ones do I want? What do I look for?
Kate in Arabia
Podcasts are shows (some audio only, some audio & video) that you can subscribe to that have multiple, ongoing episodes. Podcasts are about the only thing I use my iPod for. I'm overseas (obviously) and I get a little homesick now and then, lol, so I subscribe to a lot of the NPR podcasts which I listen to while I do dishes and the like. For example, I love to listen to Talk of the Nation, that's a free podcast you can download the day's show and listen whenever. I also download World Story of the Day, Fresh Air, sometimes Car Talk, etc. etc. There are a couple of other podcasts I subscribe to, I say it's for the kids but I like to watch them as well, lol -- Beautiful Places, Discovery Channel, National Geographic shorts. These are all short (like, 5-10 min) videos of different nature or cultural-type stuff, I like to watch them if I'm sitting in the car waiting for a few min, or my kids watch if they're waiting in the drs office. I also get Sesame Street Podcast for that purpose. Another quirky podcast I get is "Learn Hindi from Bollywood Movies", which makess me and my Indian dh laugh, lol, and maybe I do learn a vocab word or two. There's also a podcast for Arabic, and you can get podcasts for news in different languages, etc. I'm all into the freebies, I don't know if dh would agree to spending money on programs for my iPod, so all the podcasts I subscribe to are free.
Just Me
I use my ipod to listen to the Dave Ramsey show podcast (which is on the radio, but I am not available during the time is airs), and to listen to Kay Arthur. I also used to get Sean Hannity, but found that I didn't have time to listent o too many. If you are like me, you don't do much driving during the day, and staying in one room to listen to the radio isn't an option. I have found that having it on my ipod gives me the freedom to continue to move, and yet listen in. HTH!
Kate in Arabia
Oh, I also wanted to add that my dh bought me a mini speaker set that my iPod plugs into, so when I'm at home and don't want to use the earbuds I can plug it into these baby speakers (so cute) and listen that way too. Has been very handy.
Jenny in Atl
There are a tone of great Pod Casts through iTunes. You can even make one yourself and upload it to their site to share with others. They have everything from music, movies, learning languages, great courses/lectures on a number of subjects. We are often car schooling with a podcast or audio bk! sdWTMer
I love podcasts, of course, I am a talk radio junkie! I like them (I get some that I have to pay for) because I can listen at the time that is most convenient for me, not being tied to a radio and all. Another thing is that there are so many different podcasts. I get a knitting show, radio mysteries, and many others (too numerous to list). You can also find different churches and sermons, if you are a religious type. Well, that's my two cents! Hope that I didn't make you  ! K&Rs Mom
If you have video capability, 60-second Science is a lot of fun, and my kids like the Friday Night Family podcast from They Might Be Giants (mostly stuff from their soon to be out DVD). Both are free and short. I've found mostly longer (30 or 60 min) podcasts that I just don't have time to listen to, so that can be frustrating.
