Kareni
My preference is for a book (rather than an electronic device). All suggestions welcome! This will be for a student intending to major in the humanities. Thanks in advance. Regards, Kareni
Michelle in MO
Well, I don't know if this is the best all-around dictionary, but we've found Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary to be more than adequate for our needs. However, my oldest is only 17, so she hasn't actually used it in college yet, but so far it's worked great for us.
Sharon in MD
I have not researched this recently, but 4 years ago, when I was in the market for a collegiate dictionary, it was the one I liked best. Also, a must for college IMO....The Synonym Finder....way better than Roget's and much easier to use.
Anna
I have both Merriam-Webster and American Heritage. They are my two favorite dictionaries. And I agree with Sharon regarding the Synonym Finder.
Kareni
Well we do have Rodale's Synonym Finder, and I'm in agreement as to how worthwhile it is. I'll take a look at American Heritage, Merriam-Webster, and Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary when I'm at the bookstore. Feel free to add new ideas or confirmations .... home2333
You might check with the departments or professors at the college your child will be attending. Some English departments have distinct preferences when it comes to dictionaries used for English composition. Grace
Kareni
That's a good idea, Grace. I'll have to see if the bookstore has an available textbook/recommend book list on line. In the meantime, other opinions are still welcome! Regards, Kareni
