Chris in VA
The Real Revolution is an easy read (I think WP uses it for their high school level history) about the lead up to the Revolution. I found it interesting.
Janie
Not really succinct, but if I could, I'd make it required high school reading for the War for American Independence: Jeff Shaara's Rise to Rebellion and The Glorious Cause. For George Washington, check out Albert Marrin's George Washington and the Founding of a Nation. Marrin writes some of the best and succinct history around, imo. HTH! Peggy in Va
My rising 6th & 7th grade dss will be studying that period this year and I'm planning on getting three books by Richard M. Ketchum. Although I have never actually read them, I have looked at them on Amazon and they look very interesting and the reviews are all positive. My plan it to read them in the evening as a family, but I think they are also something older ds could handle on his own. The books are: Decisive Day: The Battle for Bunker Hill http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0805060995/ref=s9_subs_gw_s0_p14_t2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-6&pf_rd_r=1ATFK7B2MS03SENHH885&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938731&pf_rd_i=507846 Saratoga: Turning Point of America's Revolutionary War http://www.amazon.com/Saratoga-Turning-Point-Americas-Revolutionary/dp/0805061231/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_c Victory at Yorktown: The Campaign That Won the Revolution http://www.amazon.com/Victory-Yorktown-Campaign-That-Revolution/dp/0805073965/ref=pd_sim_b_2

LNC
Child Life in Colonial Days and Home Life in Colonial Days, both by Alice Morse Earle. Great books about everday life written in the 1800's. Sooooo much I had never read before. http://www.amazon.com/Child-Life-Colonial-American-Classics/dp/093639952X Edited July 12, 2009 by LNC
