Myra
Hi- Every Thursday night we get a pizza and watch a video as a family. If I see Spiderman, Star Wars, or Harry Potter again - I'll...well, I don't know what'll happen but believe me it won't be pretty! So...any ideas on good videos that we can get from the Library that the whole family can enjoy? They don't have to be educational - they can even be mind-numbing! Ha! Just so we can all hang out and enjoy the video night! And I hope the force will not be with me again all summer! Myra
Lori D.
I tried to gear this list with 8th and 10th grades in mind (from your signature). We have Netflix, so we've enjoyed a wide range of blockbuster films, to classics, to TV series. I also put the year beside the title so you'll know which version I meant -- there are sometimes more than one version, and some versions are trashy! So here you go, and enjoy! Caryl
We like old movies: Frank Capra's You Can't Take It With You, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Meet John Doe. These have complicated plots and thick dialogue. The younger kids love "Bringing Up Baby" Bells of Saint Mary's The Errol Flynn version of Robin Hood (a bit of chest here and there) and Prince and the Pauper (Flynn's a bit of a cad) Seven Brides for Seven Brothers Singing in the Rain Friendly Persuasion More recent: We have girls, so we watch a lot of Jane Austin stuff Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris Fiddler on the Roof (intense for younger kids) If I think of more, I'll add to the list later! Orthodox6
Great titles already listed ! (We've watched a lot of them, too.) I'll add a few more: Captain Blood The Inspector General (Danny Kaye) The Court Jester (Danny Kaye) ("The pestle in the vessel . . ." !) Guns of Navarrone Martin Chuzzlewit (When we first bought this one, the teen boys insisted that we watch the entire multi-hour film without stopping !) Our Mutual Friend The Importance of Being Ernest The Mouse on the Moon the "Jeeves and Wooster" series selected episodes of "Fawlty Towers" (some were too ribald for us) almost anything featuring The Marx Brothers
FloridaLisa
A couple of other ideas: *Last summer I was all set for a family movie night using American Film Institute's Top 100 films. We didn't make it far down the list. :tongue_smilie: Not all may be appropriate or interesting enough for your family, but it's a great list to work from. *We also love musicals around here: Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Music Man, Phantom of the Opera *IMAX films are great even in your living room. You can usually google for IMAX movies and then search your library catalog. Planet Earth and Blue Planet are amazing. HTH, Lisa P.S. Great thread as I need to update our Netflix queue. Nan in Mass
You have to remember that we are one of those families who aren't bothered by nudity. These aren't any more violent than Star Wars, but they can be violent. Talking back is considered funny in some of them. They definately won't be suitable if you are conservative Christian (I'm guessing). There is swearing. And in one, cheating is viewed as good (just so you are warned). The Princess Bride The Gods Must Be Crazy I + II Waking Ned Divine Apollo 13 Over the Hedge The Storyteller High Road to China None of these are suitable for small children. -Nan
sagira
The following selections are probably right for conservative Christians: One Night with the King (story of Biblical Esther) Bride and Prejudice (Bollywood version of Pride and Prejudice, could be some kissing, I don't remember. It IS romantic, remember? :)) My Neighbor Totoro (clean movie for the whole family -- animated) Azur and Asmar: The Princes' Quest (French animated movie, very nice that shows honor, bravery and other universal good qualities -- animated nursing tiny infants in the beginning -- tastefully done) Veer Zaara (wonderful Bollywood movie that's clean, wholesome, romantic and shows great values such as sacrifice, love and compassion -- it's long, though, and probably more for you and dh :)) Pride and Prejudice (BBC production) The Seven Voyages of Sinbad Lord of the Rings Trilogy 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (old version) Journey to the Center of the Earth (modern version with Brendan Fraser) Eight Below These might not be: I loved the Gods Must Be Crazy when I was around 12! It was funny :) We are not bothered by nudity, but I really don't like swearing. Hence, these are either with no swear words (the f- word, bleh) or minor ones occasionally: Alfred Hitchcock movies: North by NorthWest, Vertigo, and The Birds Crocodile Dundee Titanic (loooove this movie) Twister Clash of the Titans (I remember my SIL's eight grade class showing this) Superman (all three movies with Christopher Reeves) The Never-Ending Story Nancy Drew Eragon Star Gate (the movie) Edited June 15, 2009 by sagira
