st_claire
A friend is going back to school after having been out for about 4 years. He never took high school calculus. He was average at math. He will need to take calculus in September at university. What would you recommend he use to review? I was thinking Saxon. How quickly could one progress through it? Any other ideas? Thanks. KAR120C
A friend of mine swears by the Teaching Company calculus lectures on DVD... He was in a similar situation a few years ago. I've not watched all of them myself, but the first few seem very well done, and I've generally liked that company's products. Also they're frequently available at the library! :)
st_claire
Do they come with practice questions?
KAR120C
I'm pretty sure what he did was watch the video along with his regular class (or maybe a little before....) If he can get a copy of the textbook, NCState has their whole calculus series available online as realplayer files... I can't say it's the very best I've ever seen, but it's quite usable. In The Great White North
If he never had calculus and it has been four years since he had any math, I would recommend pre-calculus or even algebra. It fades fast! This sounds like a good use of the Aleks free trial.
Brenda in MA
the Aleks free trial would be a good way for him to brush up on PreCalc, etc., and the Teaching Company Calc DVDs are excellent. The instructor uses a lot of real world examples that help you understand the whys of Calculus. My son watched many of them last summer before using Chalkdust Calc at home in the fall.
