carol
My son had been spelling 2-3 grades above level so we got slack. On his SAT for 9th grade this area was LOW- I was surprised. What would you suggest for an independent learning who needs a little brushing up. He loves doing work on the computer; I don't want a work book. He is well grounded in phonics; not sure about rules. Any suggestions? Thank You.
Veronica in VA
Maybe IEW's Phonics Zoo. IEW has a test so you could see what level he would test into. It's not on the computer - it's a CD so I don't know if that would be a problem or not. But it is not a workbook. Hope that helps, Veronica
Jan P.
Carol, If your ds has done well in the past with spelling, how about using vocabulary words for spelling. There are many Latin and Greek root programs out there. Simply make it a requirement for your ds to correctly spell the vocabulary words by giving weekly tests. In this way you are killing two birds with one stone. If you don't want to use a workbook approach for the vocabulary words then try out a software program. I think I bought one from Critical Thinking Press. HTH, Jan P.
home2333
When my son was in high school, he used Spell Well: A One-Year Review for Older Students by Susan C. Anthony. It covers the most frequently misspelled words by high school students. It was not at all hard to implement. Grace
Myra
I used AVKO keyboarding with my son. It teaches typing skills while reinforcing basic spelling patterns. Also I used phonic pathways - but told my son it was to teach cursive writing - so we did all the assignments but in cursive. Also I'm using this year Vocab for the High School Student - as it requires a lot of fill in the blank with the correctly spelled vocab word - this forces my son to slow down and analyze each word.
