DB in NJ
did you say anything during the ceremony? I mean did you make a speech of any kind? I think I want to say something, but as I sit here writing it, I'm not quite sure... dh will be saying a few things, and ds has written a speech. I want to keep it brief, but there's SO MUCH I want to say that I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't say anything at all! HELP!!
Laurie4b
I just attended a ceremony for about 6 homeschooled graduates. Some of the parents spoke more than others. It was all great--except for one mom who spoke more about herself! I would keep it to an absolute maximum of 5 minutes, probably more like 2-3 since both dh and your student are speaking. Time yourself so you know how long it is. Time limits are beautiful things--they cause you to really choose what it is that is most important for you to say. That way, you'll say something memorable. laughing lioness
We spoke briefly. My dh spoke for about 10 minutes, talked about KB's personality and what is important to her. I got pretty choked up, as I knew I would, so made mine brief -maybe 2 minutes. I shared a funny homeschooling story that really captured my dd's personality. Thanked the folks that were there for investing in my dd and our family. She had a life-threatening car crash when she was 14 and life could have been so different! Gwen in VA
I reflected a bit on my kid's past -- homeschooling etc. Dh reflected a bit on where the kid was heading -- future plans etc. -- and then gave an official charge. Both speeches totaled about 6-7 minutes.
senunk
My friend recently had a high school graduation party at her home for her oldest daughter. Her husband spoke for a few moments praising his wife and daughter for their hard work. My friend spoke for about 10 minutes. She explained what led to their choosing to home school and how it has kept their family close. She brought tears to more than one eye. jelbe5
I attend a graduation ceremony last year for several students. Each student spoke briefly or played an instrument. The parents also spoke briefly. Each student had a special slide show which was shown as an introduction. The slide show consisted of pictures of the student during various life stages and accomplishments as well as family, and a meaningful song played as the pictures were being shown. It was very nice and gave me ideas for the future! Adrianne in IL
