I am confused about HS Science sequences...

Recommended Posts

My older dc were not science/math kids...well...maybe one was, but I didn't notice...sigh....

My ds is definitely an engineering type, BUT I AM A LIT BASED MOMMA!!!!!!!

UGH!!!

Anyway, I am going to have ds take his harder maths at the cc...

Now for science...He completed Apologia Biology and Advanced Bio and will be sitting for the SAT2 next week.

After Bio, I was planning on Apologia Chem and Advanced Chem and then Physics and Advanced Physics the following year...Then having him do the first engineering science course through the cc in 12th grade. NOW I am reading about Conceptual Physics...mathematical physics...science based physics...and I am confused. Does Apologia cover the math needed or should we follow up with something like Saxon?? How do you fit all these programs into 3 years without going batty or chucking all other subjects??

Can someone who focused on math and science for their kids help me out here. I promise...I will help you science/ math parents with that oddball literary kid:D

Thanks,

Faithe

Let others weigh in, but I would lean towards taking as much at the college as you can, even if it is a 100 class that is only good for high school (100s don't transfer for college credits). I faint at the thought of doing the harder sciences I am reading about here, we did do Apologia Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. But not the harder second year courses. And it was a bear without a teacher....

Hello!

Are you thinking of having your son do both Apologia Chem and Adv Chem in one year? It would be doable for a motivated student with plenty of time. At that pace, you would be covering one module per week with very little time to cover quarterly tests. If I were doing that, I would start chemistry in the summer to allow extra weeks in the school year to accommodate tests. The critical factor here, assuming your student is motivated to work through both books, is math readiness. By the time your student is working through Adv Chem, he will need to be comfortable with logs and other advanced algebra concepts. If that is an issue, your son can get extra practice with logs (and pretty good explanations of them) from purplemath.com. My older son did both Apologia chem books (in two years, though, not one) and studied a SAT 2 test prep book before taking the chem SAT 2 test last June - he did very well.

If you decide to go this route, I would seriously consider lightening up some of his other subjects to make time for chemistry. It is time consuming, even at a normal, one book per year, pace. I would also get the MicroChem kit and consider cutting out some of the labs in the book if you need to cut back on the time.

One other thing you might consider is the DIVE cd for chemistry. I have not used this, myself, but I was interestedly reading about it in another thread on this board recently. I may use that with my younger son. It was apparently designed to be used along with BJU chemistry, but the author has syllabi for other chem books popular with homeschoolers, including Apologia (he used both chem and adv chem, but offers websites for those who don't have both books). This looks very intriguing to me, and might work for your engineer- to-be son also.

Blessings to you as you hunt for science curricula!

He is very motivated...so I was planning both books over 3 semesters. He did the Biology plus extra reading and really it was very easy for him. He should be finished with Algebra 2 by January and starting Pre-calc...so I am hoping he will be math ready there. I would then like him to do Physics and Advanced Physics over then next 1 1/2 years. So...Both Chems and Both Physics over 3 years...is that Do-able??

I am planning on lightening up his other subjects...such as <GASP> :svengo: using textbooks for history and literature...OY VEY...my heart is palpitating as I say that...YIKES!!!

My son loves to read, so I am sure he will find time...but he is definitely not going Humanities...at least I don't think so....sigh...

Faithe (who hates the job of guidance counselor most of all...what if I totally blow it?? sigh.....)
