Mommyfaithe
no..I wouldn't use it for High School...even beefed up. I tried to use it for Upper Grammar stage and even then it was babyish (eye rolls from my 11 year old...sigh.) Now I HAVE used Veritas Press cards/ wb and SOTW for upper grades , but beefed up. I am not a big MOH fan though...so maybe someone else who is has better advice here. IMHO...MOH is better for little kids who don't mind being spoken to very sweetly. ~~Faithe
Mandy in TN
Have you used it for highschool?Did you beef it up with anything?? The second volume is meatier than and twice as long as the first. Have you looked at this sample. http://www.themysteryofhistory.com/pdf/weeks1-3_vol2.pdf We will be using WP's QMA next year. It uses MOH2 as its spine for most of the year, so I will be using the QMA selected readings with my middle ds. However, MOH2, the QMA cultural readings, Bible readings, and a few other books we will also be using with the little guy. I am actually toying with the idea of having my 15yo read the MOH2 selections to the 6yo. So, this begs the question- if I didn't have the 6yo that thinks his brother hung the moon and desperately wants to do everything his big brother is doing, would I try to replace the spine? Perhaps, but it is a good starting point and the weekly topics are all covered in MOH2, so maybe I just would just go with it. Am I beefing it up? Well, WP has already scheduled additional materials, but rather than trying to fit our needs into their schedule, I am eliminating and adding material to fit their schedule into our needs. From the QMA core program I am eliminating the adventure reading. To history I am adding material from Ambleside Year 7, the geography selection from Ambleside Year 9 lite, and The Teaching Company's Foundations of Western Civilization. Mandy in TN
I HAVE used Veritas Press cards/ wb and SOTW for upper grades , but beefed up. I used the VP cards for grades 5 and 6 this year with a group of high school students as a visual timeline. They were very easy to use, especially since they reference BJUP's high school US history text. On the back of the card the BJUP page numbers are already listed. There are 32 cards per set and most weeks I used two cards as jumping off points for discussion. This left 4 weeks to cover additional topics. I know that I added King Phillip's War/ native people groups and civil rights. Anyway, I agree that the VP cards are very easy to beef up. I had even considered purchasing the grade 4 cards to have around next year! Mandy
Chris in VA
I thought about it, and even assigned about 4 chapters to ds when he was in 10th grade, doing Medieval. But it's not really that rigorous, imo. I plan on using it with historical fiction from various lists for 6-7th grade.
Joan in GE
WTM high school thread link hope that link works... For high school imho, it is not sufficient as the main spine. But my children (15 and 11) just love the interesting details she digs up about people....We don't use her tests or other materials... When we're covering a topic (eg Queen Elizabeth), we just look and see if she has written about it/or a person and read that as additional material. Since she has only gotten to book 3, my children are lamenting the days when they won't be able to hear what she has found... We use Spielvogel for the 15 yo, and Kingfisher and Usborne for topics for the 11 yo. (I've tried to mesh them for the 15 yo's sake, otherwise we'd be jumping back and forth in Spielvogel and I use their tests for him). And we still give a quick read of the SOW for periods which weren't covered previously. Edited May 22, 2009 by Joan in Geneva
