Walking with Dinosaurs

Recommended Posts

We saw it when it came to Chicago. Our family really enjoyed it. My son autistic and loves Dinosaurs, so that was one of the main reasons we went to see it. The Dinosaurs are impressive. They are on moveable platforms, so they don't actually "walk" by themselves, but they looked pretty realistic in my opinion. We try to do one big show every year or so (ice show, circus, etc.).

My 13 yog gives it an 8 out of 10. My 9yog gives it a 10. My son still asks if we can go see it again . . . and again . . . and again . . .

It is geared for all ages . . . lots of cool things to see and lots of info to hear and learn about. The perspective is evolutionary of course . . . not wanting to start a debate on that, just want to let you know in case that is a problem for your family.

I took my then-10 year old son to see this last year and he LOVED it! We drove 8 hours and stayed in a hotel, and I think it was worth it because he's watched every episode of all the WWD-type documentaries dozens of times each, so it was a thrill for him to see these models up close. It's worth the extra $$$ to get good, close-up seats IMHO. Where we were sitting, the huge sauropod swung his head out and over the audience so we were UNDER his head! The triceratops spent quite a long time "munching" the plants in front of us, too, so my son really felt like he was in the middle of the Walking with Dinosaurs movie.

It does require a certain "suspension of disbelief." The models are excellent, but you can see the wheels with the large dinos, and the person's legs with the smaller raptors. It's definitely a "stage show" -- a bit more so than I was expecting, from seeing some of the still shots and short video clips. But it's still really impressive and provides a great sense of scale and a glimpse of what it would have been like to "walk with dinosaurs." A teenager might think it was a bit hokey (depending on how jaded they are, how into dinosaurs they are, etc), but I think most kids from toddler to 11 or 12 would be blown away by it and will talk about it for years to come.
