  1. Past hour
  2. I'm not seeing victim blaming at all. In fact, several women here have stated that they have actually been victims of attacks by men (and I am among those women,) yet they would still choose the man over the bear in the woods. No one seems to be saying that "men can't be bad," and I may have missed something somewhere, but I also haven't seen anyone upset about "hurting the feelings of the good men." I feel like we are reading a different thread.
  3. Yesterday
  4. These words are among a set that I pronounce more than one way, more or less ar random. Route oot and route out--I say both. Same with 5 syllable vs 4 syllable laboratory. And either comes out as ee-ther or as eye-ther as predictably as flipping a coin.
  5. I have cooked it in Chinese style soups, but unless I find myself with an iron deficiency in the middle of, say, a pandemic related, supply issue problem and this is about all that turned up at my local supermarket, I wouldn't bother again.
  6. I eat it stewed with peas and rice, and veg from the Jamaican restaurant near my house. This recipe is highly rated and looks good, but I've never cooked it. https://www.myforkinglife.com/jamaican-oxtails/
  7. I love a NJ accent. And a Cajun accent. And a TX accent. I was surprised at how easy it was to pick up that heavy Boston accent last time we lived in that area. At first, I couldn't even do it when I tried to do it. But after a couple of years, seemed like every time I opened my mouth, there it was! Effortless! lol I thought maybe because it was slightly similar to a Southern accent. It disappeared when we moved though. And now I can't do it at all. But I love to hear it. Although some of the women up there told me that when they were growing up the "nuns" refused to let them use that accent. One of my dd worked at a job where there was a man who was trained to recognize accents. He told her that when she got stressed he could hear a south Louisiana accent in her speech. I had picked it up from my relatives and I guess she picked it up from me. Accents are so much fun. 🙂
  8. Last year for the first time I was allowed to choose my own beef order. One of the things I got was ox tail. Yesterday I finally made it in the crockpot following an online recipe. Then I pulled it off the bone and served it with the jus with rice. It was good, but not life changing like all the sites on the internet made it out to be. Just seemed like roast. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to just slap down the whole joint on the plate or not, so pulled the meat. I have another package to fix at one point, so I’m looking for suggestions
  9. The only time I've ever heard someone say/write that they didn't have an accent was from an American, and I've never understood it, because there are so many different accents in America! People say my son has 'an American accent' because some of the words he says he's learned from youtube - so words like 'route' he'll say with an 'out' instead of 'oot' like I'd say it. I always hassle my kids to pronounce 'laboratory' rather than 'lab-ra-tory' the way they hear it on youtube. I was talking to locals about how the accents are changing locally. We have the 'originals' who have a country accent, the 'weekenders' who are wealthy and have a posh accent, and then the newbies who have moved up here since covid and have something in between. Even just in Sydney there are so many different accents, the Lebanese inspired western suburbs accent vs the anglo western suburbs accent (see Housos for both of those!), the Eastern suburbs accent (rich and posh) vs the Northern suburbs accent (also rich and posh, but not as much). I have a bit of a country accent but not very much - however when I went to the USA for a course, out of all the Australians they struggled with my accent and vocab the most.
  10. Not free where my DS19 is at. He has to install an app for the washer and dryer. The advantage of the app is that it tells him when the washer and dryer are done. He rarely runs a load just like when I was in college. His campus is cash free so we got him a secured credit card when he turned 18 to use on campus. We also got him a new cellphone since his cellphone was more than 3 years old and has no more Andriod OS updates The most important skill for my boys is to learn to advocate for themselves, whether it is health or academic. They learn to advocate for themselves academically while doing dual enrollment classes. They went through the degree audit to get their associate degrees. Health wise, my kid add me as "authorized user" on their healthcare accounts so that I can help them look if they need me to. Financially, we don't qualify for any aid so the student bills are hyper easy to comprehend. @pehp I get my quarters from the coin changing machines next to those coin operated rides. If I need more quarters, I could change at the bank.
  11. Alpha Dom is astonishing in part because there is absolutely nothing about him to make his claims of rampant dating success believable. He is the guy in the club who sends you running for the restroom when you think there's even a chance he's walking your way (his dental hygiene is noticeably lacking even on low-res video). On the one hand, it's good that people share his videos for people to see the batshit insanity that's out there, but on the other hand, it's just making him look 'important' to his followers, even when he's just being dragged to filth. Who is keeping anyone from considering and/or choosing traditional roles? Absolutely no one. I know that there have always been people who have criticized the choice, just as there are people who criticize the opposite choice, but that in no way takes anyway anyone's right to make that decision. Women have plenty of actual rights being taken away, but this isn't one of them. And another! I went back to work after homeschooling in large part to model for my daughters that it doesn't have to be an either/or choice. I worked before staying home, I worked after staying home, we modeled a partnership that was not salary-dependent. I also worked and freelanced part-time while homeschooling, both to model it and to emphasize that I could always get a job and take care of the family as needed. Part of me is really stuck on the fact that it is apparently devastating to men to deal with the problems that women have historically dealt with while still carrying on, but I am trying hard to keep this quote from the description in mind: “We can hold two thoughts in our head at once. We can be passionate about women’s rights and compassionate toward vulnerable boys and men.” ((I haven't read the book yet))
  12. No quarters at DD's university either, but also not free. They load money in an app!
  13. I agree. I can’t put my finger on it but all of this “poor men” on this thread about how some women feel feels a little like victim blaming or victim shaming. If men can’t be bad because my husband, father, brother, are great upstanding men, then what about all these women who have victimized? Their attacks happened, by something. If we can’t call it out as having been done by a man, because it hurts the feelings of the “good” men, then what does that say? It feels odd.
  14. Katy

    Man or bear?

What a lovely story. I don’t think it’s that men are demonized, any more than women are demonized. I think the problem is the 2% or so of those who are malevolent have dozens to hundreds of victims.
  15. Scary!Glad they are doing the MRI- hopefully with and without contrast. Praying for both of you & hoping it's nothing serious. In Aug 2022 my husband had a new headache, which led to confusion, stumbling, went to the ER while on a business trip and discovered he had a large colloidal cyst in the 3rd ventricle of his brain that was blocking the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and causing severe hydrocephalus. He had emergency brain surgery that saved his life.
  16. Working volcano model built around a miniature 1 liter bottle. Diorama of archeologists opening a mummy case. Maybe a cat mummy beside it? Buoyancy tank Rock cycle display with samples of various kinds of rocks.
  17. I played 2 hrs of tennis yesterday and my wrist felt fine, though I played horribly. So many errors and miss-hits. Dh and I are playing mixed doubles tonight, which should be fun. Hopefully my focus will be better today. 😉 It's COLD again! Snow flurries this morning with a very cold wind. I played the whimpy card and did not go for a dog walk.
  18. WOOHOO!!! That is wonderful news! Thanks for sharing! I love how his boss has more 'carrots' in the near future to keep your dh satisfied that there is a real progression pathway for him at this company.
  19. I agree about The Rest is History. The History Chicks is two women talking about historical women. I really enjoy both of these podcasts but I'm a history nerd 🤓
  20. Is there a local ARC group? I know the specific issues might not seem right for that group, but in our area ARC is a general umbrella, not necessarily limited to intellectual disability. They might be able to provide contact information for some appropriate programs, either for summer or throughout the year.
  21. TKD class, taught by dd14. She is murder on the warm-ups!
